The expansion of Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam has crossed the 81 per cent mark, according to refinery sources. The Centre has approved raising the refinery's capacity from 3 million metric tonnes per annum to 9 million metric tonnes per annum.
Funding for the project has gone up to Rs 28,026 crore from the earlier figure of Rs 22,514 crore. The government has directed that the work be completed within 2026.
Once complete, the expansion is expected to raise refining output and support the crude oil sector in Assam and the wider Northeast. Higher output is also expected to help meet the demand for LPG in the region.
The refinery also plans to enter the petrochemical sector using new technology. Numaligarh Refinery is located in Golaghat district of Upper Assam. Once the work is done, its capacity will be three times what it is today, which makes the project one of the most closely watched industrial upgrades in the region.
