Himanta Biswa Sarma took the oath of office as Chief Minister of Assam on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, beginning his second consecutive term. The ceremony was held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Four ministers were sworn in with him. They were Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog of the BJP, Atul Bora of the Asom Gana Parishad and Charan Boro of the Bodoland People's Front.

A third NDA term

The new government is the third straight National Democratic Alliance government in the state. The BJP's two allies, the AGP and the BPF, won ten seats each in the Assembly election. Sarma won his own seat by a margin of more than 80,000 votes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the event, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP president Nitin Nabin. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states were also present. The alliance named Ranjeet Kumar Dass as its candidate for Speaker of the new Assembly.
