The Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram completed one year of operation on 13 September 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the line a year earlier, bringing the state capital Aizawl onto the national rail map.

According to the Ministry of Railways, the line has brought major development to the hill state. Three long-distance trains now connect Aizawl with Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express gave Mizoram its first direct premium train service to the national capital.

Passengers and freight

Sairang station has recorded more than five lakh passenger movements since the line opened. Over the same period, more than 2,500 railway wagons of freight have been delivered at Sairang.

The goods carried on the route include essential commodities, automobiles and construction materials meant for Aizawl. Before the line opened, such goods reached the state mainly by road. Rail now offers a second option for both people and cargo travelling to and from Mizoram.
