Kaziranga National Park reopened for the 2026-27 tourist season on Saturday, 3 October 2026, after its yearly monsoon closure. Assam's Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah formally opened the park at the Central Kohora Range.

Jeep safaris restarted on the same day, while elephant safaris were expected to resume within about 20 days. Safaris run in two slots every day, from 7.30 am to 10 am and from 1.30 pm to 3 pm. Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora and Kaziranga MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were also present.

Rhinos and tigers

Of the 2,895 one-horned rhinos recorded in Assam, 2,613 live in Kaziranga. The park is also home to 104 of the state's 229 tigers. Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The minister said bookings so far point to higher arrivals than last season. Officials plan new tourism circuits linking Kaziranga with nearby places, so that visitors stay for two to four days. The return of tourists is good news for safari operators, guides, resort owners and hospitality workers in the area.
