Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam reopened for the 2026-27 tourist season on 13 October 2026. Environment and Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah opened the sanctuary after the Navaratri festival, as tourist numbers in and around Guwahati were rising.

New Gypsy vehicles have been added this year to meet the growing demand for safaris, the minister said. Elephant safaris are set to begin in November. Manas National Park reopened on 2 October and Kaziranga National Park on 3 October.

A rhino stronghold

According to the minister, Pobitora has a density of 16 rhinos per square kilometre. The sanctuary's website says it has the highest density of greater one-horned rhinos in India. It is made up of the Rajamayong and Pobitora reserve forests, and the Rajamayong hills are home to leopards, capped langurs, porcupines and pangolins.

Eight rhinos from Pobitora have been moved to Manas National Park under the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 programme. The minister also said that rhino poaching, which was common in the area ten to twelve years ago, has now come down to zero.
