Assam marked the first death anniversary of singer, composer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on 19 September 2026. Tributes and programmes were held in many parts of the state to honour the artist.
A three-day Zubeen Divas programme was observed from 17 September. Thousands of admirers gathered at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, near Guwahati, where his last rites were performed a year ago, to pay their respects and celebrate his work.
A vast body of work
Over a music career of 33 years, Garg recorded more than 40,000 songs in nearly 40 languages and dialects. Apart from singing and composing, he was also known as a lyricist, actor and filmmaker.
He died on 19 September 2025 in Singapore. The gathering at Sonapur on the anniversary showed how closely his admirers still follow his legacy, a year after his passing, and the tributes across the state were a reminder of his place in Assamese music and cinema.
