Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on 3 July 2026 virtually inaugurated 16 sports infrastructure projects across the state. The event was held at the Chief Minister's Residential Complex in Kohima.
Four of the projects were built under the Khelo India programme, and the other twelve were funded by the state. Deputy Chief Ministers Y Patton and T R Zeliang, advisors and senior officials attended the event, while Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya joined online.
The Khelo India projects include multipurpose halls at Changtongya and Mangkolemba in Mokokchung district and at Kuhuboto in Niuland district. A prefabricated indoor sports hall has also come up at the Police Reserve in Wokha town.
The state-funded projects include futsal grounds, prefabricated multipurpose halls and other facilities spread across nine districts. These are Kiphire, Noklak, Wokha, Phek, Mon, Chumoukedima, Kohima, Dimapur and Peren. The new facilities are expected to give young athletes in these districts better places to train, closer to home. Rio later thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on X.
