Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is ready for the Ambubachi Mela 2026, a four-day festival that draws lakhs of devotees every year. The mela begins on the night of 22 June and continues until the morning of 26 June.
The sanctum will close after the Pravritti ritual at 9.08 pm on 22 June. No darshan will be allowed on 23, 24 and 25 June. On the morning of 26 June, the Nivritti ritual will reopen the temple after purification and daily worship, and devotees will receive the rakta bastra prasad.
The festival marks the yearly menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya and is seen as a celebration of fertility, creation and the divine feminine. Pilgrims, saints, sadhus and tantric practitioners from across India and abroad attend, and many had already reached the Nilachal Hills days before the start.
The temple administration and the Assam government have made arrangements for crowd control, security, sanitation, stay and transport. Temple priest Himadri Sarma said the authorities were fully prepared to manage every part of the festival.
