The semiconductor plant being built by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd at Jagiroad in Assam is expected to start production in the current financial year. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said this after meeting Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi on 30 May 2026.

The project involves an investment of Rs 27,000 crore. Once running, the plant is projected to package up to 48 million chips a day. It will use advanced packaging technologies, including flip-chip and Integrated System in Package.

Jobs and skills

The unit is expected to create about 15,000 direct jobs and between 11,000 and 13,000 indirect jobs. Its chips are aimed at sectors such as automobiles, electric vehicles, telecommunications and consumer electronics. A National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology centre has been proposed to train young people for work in chip manufacturing.

At the same meeting, the two leaders also discussed railway projects in the state. These include more than 1,300 km of track expansion and the redevelopment of over 50 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
