The first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly came to a close on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, after sitting for five days. Its main piece of business was the passage of the Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill 2026.

Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass told the House that two Bills had been cleared during the session, with the UCC Bill being one of them. He then adjourned the House sine die and said that important work had been done in the very first sitting of the new Assembly.

Members also adopted a government resolution on women's representation. It calls for the 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures to be put in place quickly once the delimitation exercise is complete.

The session opened with newly elected MLAs taking their oath before pro-tem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary. The House then elected BJP leader Dass as its Speaker. On the second day, Lakshman Prasad Acharya addressed the members. This was the first sitting of the House since the 2026 Assembly election, which brought the NDA back to power in the state.
