New six-lane Brahmaputra bridge to link Guwahati and North Guwahati

The 1.24 km bridge with an extradosed design is expected to cut travel time between the two banks of the river.

A new six-lane bridge across the Brahmaputra, connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati, was set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 14 February 2026. The Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge has been built at a cost of about Rs 3,000 crore.

The bridge is 1.24 km long and uses an extradosed design, which has been described as the first of its kind in Northeast India. The work was carried out by SPS Construction India. The bridge takes its name from Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the seventh-century king of Kamarupa.

Officials expect the new link to reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion. It is meant to make trips smoother for daily commuters, goods vehicles and long-distance travellers moving between the two banks of the river.

The bridge also gives easier access to national institutions and cultural landmarks in North Guwahati. It is part of wider plans to develop North Guwahati as a twin city, so that growth in the region is spread across both sides of the Brahmaputra rather than being limited to the south bank.
